One day after Zachary Taylor’s death, Vice President Millard Fillmore took the executive oath of office. He was the second vice president to become President upon the death of the incumbent. In 1992, the Miller Center hosted the National Commission on Choosing and Using Vice Presidents, which examined criteria and qualifications for selecting a vice president. Former Secretary of State Edmund S. Muskie and former Maryland Senator Charles McC. Mathias co-chaired the Commission.
